Discover a Good Relationship with your Gynecologist |
| Page: 1 2 next -> |
This question is a bit more loaded than it sounds. Few women relish the thought of a gynecological appointment - fewer still want to engage in a time consuming screening process of many different doctors. Obviously women's health is of crucial importance, and women should be empowered to find a physician who can make their gynecological experience rewarding. Culturally, women's sexual health and being has often been dragged through the mud in negative stigmas, resulting in feelings of shame, embarrassment, and hatred toward women's bodies. Many young women refuse to see gynecologists because they are either afraid or embarrassed about their bodies. This is a dangerous pattern. Sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise, and some infections, if untreated, have long-term effects on future pregnancies, and even end in death.
Therefore, the process of choosing a gynecologist begins with a woman's decision to take control of her own body and want to achieve optimal sexual and emotional health for herself. A woman and her physician should maintain an open, honest relationship. Information hidden from each other only prevents optimal health. It is the doctor's job to inform the patient of any findings, whether they are positive or negative - and the patient's responsibility to tell the doctor all possible symptoms or experiences. Telling the whole truth about your sexual past or any sexual experiences to a virtual stranger can feel awkward and even humiliating to some, but absolutely necessary for the doctor to help you.
One way to make yourself more comfortable with your gynecologist is by requesting she speaks with you while you are fully dressed, in an office rather than an exam room. Sitting on an exam table in a flimsy paper gown is not conducive to open conversation - you might as well be naked! You are more likely to have a mature, positive relationship with your doctor if you can talk in a warm, professional setting, like her office. And never be hesitant to ask questions - the only dumb question is the one that was never asked. You deserve the right to know everything about your body. |
