WE QUIT! Kick a Cigarette Habit Together |
| Page: 1 2 next -> |
Smoking is not only a bad habit, it's an obvious bad habit. Studies have proven that smoking leads directly to lung cancer, heart disease, and other fatal illnesses. However, despite these findings, millions of people continue to smoke cigarettes. There are currently many products on the market, such as the patch, gum, and pills designed to ease your body off the nicotine addiction. These products are effective if used correctly, but they can also be expensive (although cigs are pretty pricey too, they add up!) and some can become addictive themselves.
An alternative method is to try and quit with your partner. If you and your partner both smoke, develop a plan that will help you quit together, and move toward a healthier, better lifestyle. Just like exercising, working together with someone else keeps you on track and helps you stay focused on your goals. By working together with your partner, you will remind each other of how much you care for each other and want to be together for a long, long time. Thus, you may achieve a smoke-free lifestyle, and you?ll also be working on developing the intimacy in your relationship. Even if only one person in the relationship smokes, their partner can be encouraging and helpful.
First, identify what kind of smoker you are. Do you chain-smoke all day, or just light up at the bar occasionally on weekends? People smoke for different reasons, so it?s important to differentiate your preferences from your partner?s. When you have figured out your smoking schedules, think of ways that you can alter your day to avoid the urge to puff away. For example, instead of eating lunch at a crowded smoky restaurant, take your partner on a picnic in the park, in the fresh air, or conversely, take him to a restaurant that does not allow smoking. Sit together in the non-smoking section of restaurants, or go to the movies instead of hitting the bar after work, to concentrate on something other than social smoking.
Depending on your habits, it may take some time to get to the point where you don?t crave a cigarette. Use the support of your partner to encourage you to get through the day. Leave messages on each other?s voice mail, or on email at work, and definitely throw away all matches, ashtrays, empty packs or cartons, or anything else in your home that might remind you of cigarettes. For women in particular, weight gain can be a concern for quitters; make sure to focus on eating healthfully, and never mention any slight weight gain as negative. |
