Did you realize that simply changing your beliefs you can improve the state of your health? You may have noticed that when you are experiencing a lot of stress in your life, you feel awful physically. When you are in the whirlwind of a new relationship, you feel wonderful emotionally but physically as well. This is no accident. Put simply, the way you think affects the way you feel.
This concept works on a large scale. What you think, what you believe is constantly creating an effect in your physical being. If we are emotionally distressed, our brain is sending a destructive message to our immune system. This is when we can fall victim to a cold or the flu. However, if the belief or negative thoughts become a long term state of mind then much more serious illnesses can occur.
When emotions are suppressed for a long period of time, we are setting ourselves up for the development of a serious physical illness. There is a biochemical effect that is a direct result of this suppression. The immune system in our bodies helps keep illness at bay as long as there are positive messages coming from our own thoughts and beliefs.
Culture is another factor in this equation. What we believe is heavily influenced by the messages our cultural surroundings send to us each and every day. Without even being very aware of this ‘invisible influence’, the effects are apparent when you take a good look at the situation. Studies have shown that the immune system is directly influenced by the perception of stress. When we feel that we have no way to escape from a stressful situation, our immune system is suppressed leaving us open to all kinds of illness.
If we are able to cope with incoming stress, we avoid immunosuppression (the slowing down or stopping of immune system response) and corticosteroids (hormones from the adrenal glands). This is crucial to good health. We don’t need to be in a constant state of bliss to achieve a strong immune system. It is simply a matter of being aware and focusing on a plan to cope with our day-to-day stresses. If we believe we are ‘stuck’ with our situation, we have given up our powers to change. This can lead to hopelessness and despair that starts the negative spiral for one’s health. |
