More Stress Rx: Enhance your life with Less… |
| Page: 1 2 3 next -> |
Recently I drove up to Montauk (the very tip of Long Island) for a weekend beach trip with some friends. We brought plenty of beer, sandwiches, towels, a football… but there was no mention of laptops or a need to check email. Sure, we took a cell phone for the car ride (you never know what can happen on the Cross Bronx Expressway) but left it locked in the glove box. The house we stayed in had one phone, local calls only, and no answering machine. It did, however, have a gorgeous deck, pool, and view of the ocean. After three days of blissful vacationing, relaxing, and tanning, we headed back to Philadelphia recharged, much like my cell phone.
Although it might be obvious to some, others neglect to notice just how electronic their lives have become. Sure, I was on vacation, where the purpose is to get away from all that, but I was surprised at the number of people lugging Palm Pilots, cell phones, and laptops to the beach. It’s hard to imagine life only ten years ago, when I took ten-hour car trips to Maine without instant means of communication; similarly, when people called back later instead of leaving mumbled messages or buzzing into my conversation with call waiting. My parents discontinued their call waiting services a year ago. While it’s annoying to hear that busy signal, it was more annoying to catch my mother in the middle of her other call, “I’m on the other line,” she stressed impatiently.
All this fast-paced, high-tech innovation is a proven cause of stress and anxiety. Perhaps one reason being that people are convinced they can’t live without their phones and E-briefcases. And so, even the idea of a “vacation” is not exclusive of technology. Hotel rooms proudly feature DSL Internet cable services, complicated messaging services, and interactive TV. Even on the beach I witnessed the tragedy of a man plugging away on his Palm Pilot, cursing and muttering as his kids waved from the water’s edge. If you can’t enjoy yourself on a vacation, what’s the point? |
