More Stress Rx: Enhance your life with Less…
Page:  <- Previous  1  2  3  next ->

     All this led me back to the idea of “getting away” from things.  In our modern world, to get away doesn’t necessarily mean literally and physically.  That desperate man with his Palm Pilot followed me all the way to Montauk.  Now we must get away from the electronic devices that hold us captive, dependent on their assistance.  We must take control of their hold on us – resist the temptation to be controlled by machines.  In some professions, clearly, there is a need for immediate cell phone availability; whether you are a physician on call or a mother with young children.  However, there are ways in which most of us can reclaim a less stressed life, relatively free of dependency upon the electronic age.

1.     Turn off cell phones in places you go to relax.  There is no need to receive calls    in a quiet coffee shop or during your massage.  Let your phone silently take messages you can listen to when you’re ready.  Never allow yourself to feel you must use your phone simply because you carry it with you.

2.     Check your email once a day.  Pick a time when you are least busy, and able to devote your full attention to your email.  Compare your e-mail to regular “snail” mail – it gets delivered once a day, and is something to look forward to, not feel obliged to check for all the time.

3.     If you do go on vacation, leave all unnecessary electronic items at home.  Cell phones are helpful to have for emergency purposes; laptops and Palm Pilots are not.  Remind yourself the reasons for vacationing, and plan ahead so you won’t have to bring any work with you.

4.     If you are not planning a vacation away from home, create a mini-vacation at your home.  Turn off all phones, computers, and TVs.  Bring out the cobwebbed board games and playing cards, light a couple of tikki torches in your backyard and relax.  If you’re not in an urban area you might see stars in the night sky – a refreshing change of graphics.
